Texas - Abilene State Park - Day 13

Yes, we are still here at Abilene State Park.  We are waiting to hear from the Ford garage about the part for our motorhome.  It was a stopped up catalytic converter and they had to order the part but hopefully sometime today we will hear about getting it into the garage to be installed.

As we walked around the park this morning we came across an unusual tree with unusual fruit on the ground below it.  We found out that it is called a Hedge Apple or Horse Apple or Bodock or Osage Orange tree.  Depending in what part of the country you are determines what the locals call it.  The fruit is the size of a softball and lime green in color.  The naturally bending branches of this tree led to the natives using them for bows.

Bodock or Osage Orange Tree

once opened the fruit acts as a natural insect repellant

hedge apple, horse apple, dew gourd - all common names for this softball size fruit
It is definitely not a hardship waiting out our time in this park or being near the town of Buffalo Gap.  It is quite the eclectic little town.  We journeyed into Lola's for Navajo fry bread this morning but ended up eating another great Mexican meal.

On the way back to the park we stopped at Lake Abilene.  This drought is taking its toll on all the rivers, creeks and lakes.

I especially like this sign that leads into our camping loop.  It is very confusing until you understand it.

take your pick right or left??
