As we walked around the park this morning we came across an unusual tree with unusual fruit on the ground below it. We found out that it is called a Hedge Apple or Horse Apple or Bodock or Osage Orange tree. Depending in what part of the country you are determines what the locals call it. The fruit is the size of a softball and lime green in color. The naturally bending branches of this tree led to the natives using them for bows.

once opened the fruit acts as a natural insect repellant |
hedge apple, horse apple, dew gourd - all common names for this softball size fruit |
On the way back to the park we stopped at Lake Abilene. This drought is taking its toll on all the rivers, creeks and lakes.
I especially like this sign that leads into our camping loop. It is very confusing until you understand it.
take your pick right or left?? |
