Arizona - Fairbank Historic Townsite - Ghost Town

Just ventured down the road a couple of miles and took in Fairbank, a historic town site and ghost town.  It came into existence in 1881 with the construction of the New Mexico and Arizona railroad.

We took the right hand path that led us first to the Fairbank cemetery which was at least half a mile from the town site.
arched branches frame these three cowgirls coming up the path towards us

It seemed like an unlikely spot for a cemetery because it was high on a rocky hill.

although this grave site is ill kept it has a panoramic view of the countryside
and the surrounding mountains

the cement cross on the left dated the burial as 1919

most of the graves were marked with wooden stakes or crosses and all were in ill repair

the mountains surround and open skies above -
what better place for your last repose

We walked the half mile from the cemetery to the town site of Fairbank, a town at its peak that had 15,000 citizens.
