Texas - Lost Maples State Park

From Garner State Park we headed 22 miles up the road to Lost Maples State Park.

this pic doesn't do justice to the greatness of the Hill Country

lots of twist, turns and climbs heading to Lost Maples
This is a much smaller park with only 30 campsites.  We could only get a site for two days and then we had to move on.  Lots of campers out on this long weekend.

campsites are once again large and accommodating
The afternoon of our arrival we went for a walk along the Maple trail.  Too bad that it is not fall because the maples would be in all their splendor but then if it was fall we probably wouldn't get a campsite.

just imagine this maple in its fall splendor

couldn't resist taking a pic of this maple leaf amongst the limestone rocks
and looking out onto a hillside of color in the fall - would be glorious
The first part of our walk was amongst the boulders that had fallen from the limestone cliffs.

we took a more level route along the Sabinal river back to camp

the Sabinal River flows through the park and is home to the Guadalupe Bass

couldn't resist this framed shot
When we were told we could stay a second night in the same campsite because of a cancellation, I quickly put out the bird feeders only to be told by a Ranger an hour later that a new law for State Parks is no feeding of any kind of wildlife.  I think that will raise a hue and cry in a lot of these birding parks along the Rio Grande.  I was fortunate to see a couple of new birds at our site besides the cardinals.
